Hyderabad: After the non-availability of steel, fine sand is putting spokes into the double bedroom project for the urban poor under the GHMC limit.
The 2BHK project requires 5 lakh cubic metres of fine sand and the civic house does not even possess 5 cubic metres at present, said a senior GHMC official. The corporation has identified that it would fall short of fine sand to construct 1 lakh 2BHK houses within a week. Due to its non-availability, plastering work on 176 2BHK units at Singam Cheruvu (Thanda), Uppal, is hit. To stave off a crisis, the corporation has informed the government about the shortage.
A senior official said that even though the corporation can manage with rough sand it would not give strength to the construction.
He said that the 2BHK project might be halted if the situation continues as construction of 90,000 2BHK houses in Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medchal and Ranga Reddy districts have already started.
Earlier this month, builders locked horns with the GHMC over escalation in steel prices. They demanded a hike in the unit cost of the 2BHK project and threatened to compromise on quality.
The steel prices were hovering around Rs 30,000 per tonne in 2015 when the agreement for the 2BHK housing project was inked.
The prices rose to Rs 47,000 per tonne in 2017 and are expected to reach Rs 50,000 per tonne shortly. About the price escalation, the official said that it would be resolved through a series of meetings.
