Kozhikode turns hub of moral police'
KOZHIKODE: State police chief Loknath Behera had told his men to act tough on vigilantes, but it appears to have had no impact in Kozhikode, as moral policing in public places continues unabated here. Besides the main beach, Konadu and Bhutt road beaches have now become their fiefdom where they will allow no couple to remain there after 8.30 pm without their permission.
"On Sunday, around 8.30 pm, I was on the Bhatt road beach with my fiancée when a group of people suddenly appeared and asked us to leave," said Rohith N.G., a bank employee. "This is ridiculous. The way they approached us was even worse as they forced us to leave. Since we both are not from the city and hails from Wayanad, we did not react for fear."
Not just Rohith and his fiancée, many young couples face such vigilantes on the beaches here. According to Town Station SI Shambu Nath, the incident has two different dimensions. "One is that there have been several cases of robbery, use of narcotic stuff and other crimes reported from these places. Hence local people are also taking extra precaution," he said. "At the same time, few people are attempting moral policing. They question visitors. Even we have received few complaints."
