Chennai: A 31-year-old man who attempted suicide by jumping off a flyover in Royapettah survived after he fell on a car under the flyover from a height of 30 feet on Sunday night. The man, said to be depressed as he was not married, suffered grievous injuries in the fall.

The man was identified as S. Vasanth, a resident of Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Thiruvanmiyur. He worked at a private company near Santhome, police said.
On Sunday night, he was returning home in an auto rickshaw when he got off the vehicle and jumped from the flyover, police sources said.

Luckily, for Vasanth he fell on a car that happened to pass under at that moment. The occupant of the car, Junaidh (29), was shocked and abandoned the car and fled initially, police said. Junaidh was driving towards his residence in Secretariat colony.

A few passerby who noticed the incident rushed to Vasanth’s aid and moved him to the Government Royapettah hospital nearby for treatment. Vasanth was later shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital, where he is being treated for injuries in his spinal cord and shoulder. Hospital authorities said that his condition is stable and that he can be discharged after a few days. Police investigations revealed that Vasanth was depressed as he was not married.
