Government responsible for bull tamer deaths: Thirumavalavan

He said, demanding the state government to pay a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the family of each victims and Rs 1 lakh for the injured.

Chennai: VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan on Sunday held the state government responsible for the death of two bull tamers during a jallikattu event in Rapoosal Village in Pudukottai district, which was inaugurated by the state minister.

“Two bull tamers were killed in a jallikattu event in Pudukottai that was inaugurated by a state minister even as the state government was priding itself for promulgating an ordinance. Scores of people were also injured,” Mr Thirumavalavan said in a statement here. The jallikattu event in Rapoosal was flagged off by health and family welfare minister C Vijaya Baskar.

He condemned the state government for showing keen interest to take credit for holding the jallikattu event without taking any steps to conduct the sport in safe manner.

“The state government should take responsibility for the two youths’ deaths,” he said, demanding the state government to pay a compensation of Rs 25 lakh to the family of each victims and Rs 1 lakh for the injured.

Pointing out that jallikattu was banned for the first time by the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court following the case filed by a person whose son was killed by a bull while watching it, he demanded that the state government explain whether the rules pertaining to the safety measures to be taken for holding the event were followed. He expressed anguish that the jallikattu events were held across the state government for its selfish motive even as the protestors were opposing it.
