CPM asks govt to invite minorities
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPM state secretariat on Friday decided to invite minorities and religious leaders for the women wall being organised on January 1 to uphold the values of renaissance movement.
The decision, taken at the party’s state secretariat meeting, will be conveyed to the government. The CPM leadership said people belonging to different faiths will be invited to take part in the women wall. “The party wants to make the women wall event an inclusive affair,” it said.
The CPM decision comes in the wake of criticism that the women wall was “communal” as the government had planned to involve people and organisations belonging to a particular religion.
The opponents of government had pointed out that inviting people from a particular religion was an attempt to exclude the others. The Muslims and Christians had played a major role in renaissance movement and social reform movement, they had pointed out.
The CPM state secretariat discussed the NSS stand in connection with the Sabarimala issue. The two-day CPM state committee meeting beginning from Saturday will take up these issues in detail.
Meanwhile, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan slammed NSS general secretary G. Sukumaran Nair accusing him of adding fuel to RSS led agitations in the state in the name of Sabarimala.
In his weekly column in party mouthpiece Deshabhimani, the CPM state secretary said Mr Nair had deviated from the NSS's equidistance policy to help the anti-communist forces in the state. The NSS leadership should think over whether the stand taken by the general secretary was in consonance the ideals upheld by Chattambi Swami and Mannathu Padmanabhan.
