Bengaluru: Man poses as income tax officer, dupes many

The duo began calling up people posing as IT officials and informed them about an update on their income tax filing.

Bengaluru: Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths have arrested a 24-year-old man who was posing as an Income Tax officer and had duped people online.

The accused has been identified as John Kajiche, a native of Dhimapura in Nagaland and a resident of Ejipura. He used to called up victims and got OTPs from them to get amount transferred to his account.

Kajiche came to the city a few months ago and rented a house along with his associate in crime in Ejipura. The duo began calling up people posing as IT officials and informed them about an update on their income tax filing.

Once the person showed interest, the accused used to convince them to click on a link which he sends and submit a few details.

According to a complaint filed by a victim on December 15, the accused asked him to click on a link he sent and within a span of few minutes, amount got deducted from his account in installment. The complainant claimed the accused duped him of Rs 2.2 lakh, police said.

Based on a complaint, the CCB officials picked up Kajiche while his friend is still at large. The police are investigating if the accused were involved in similar cases.

The police have also issued an advisory requesting people not to fall prey to people informing them about winning lottery.
