Mumbai: The alleged Rs 2 lakh bill that the Congress owes to a chaiwallah (tea seller), in the vicinity of its party office has caused tremors among party members. The reason behind this is that no one knows who ordered so much tea, and the Congress is neither denying the amount nor confirming it.
When contacted, Sanjay Nirupam, the Mumbai president of the Congress, flatly refused to speak on the issue. He told this correspondent to speak to the party’s accounts incharge called Bhavsar.
But when Mr Bhavsar was gotten in touch with, he claimed he cannot talk because he is busy with a family function. However, a senior Congress leader, who regularly visits the party office, claimed that most people pay the amount in cash, so the source of this unpaid bill of Rs 2 lakh is a matter of concern.
“It seems that everyone coming to the party office has started ordering tea on the party’s account. We need to look into the issue, or else things will turn worse,” said the leader on condition of anonymity.
According to sources, the party leaders are thinking of not letting anyone order food and tea henceforth in the name of the party or on its account.
Apparently, Ashok Chavan, after becoming the state president, stopped everyone from ordering food in the name of the party from a nearby food stall.
