Clean Kannur waste piles up at schools
Kannur: The plastic waste collection campaign as part of the Clean Kannur campaign of the Kannur District Administration is creating problems for some schools as heaps of garbage have not been collected by scrap dealers or the panchayats. However, in most schools, the campaign is running successfully with sacks of plastics being collected and being handed over to scrap dealers.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Kannur District Collector Mir Mohammed Ali said that the plastic waste which had not been picked up from schools, would soon be removed from the institutions. “So far the project is going on smoothly. Only from schools in Iritty region, we have got complaints regarding the waste collection. It is the duty of civic bodies to take care of the plastic waste thus collected and I have already directed the panchayats and scrap dealers to do so. I hope the issue will be sorted out soon,” he said. “It is better to be put in sacks at one place rather than being scattered on roads or rivers,” he added.
“In our school, the campaign is running successfully. During the initial days of the campaign, we were sending sacks of waste frequently. At present, we are collecting it on every Wednesday,” said Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Kannur Principal Sugeetha Rajan.
The schools also have a WhatsApp group in which the Collector is also part. Here they can raise doubts and complain about the campaign. The campaign intends making Kannur free from plastic carry bags and other disposable plastic materials by April 2 next year.
The administration has also teamed up with the Kerala Hotel and Restaurants Association (KHRA) offering discounts to those who carry tiffin boxes for parcels instead of taking hotel plastics bags.
