Central team to visit Tamil Nadu tomorrow

The Tamil Nadu government has demanded Rs 22,500 crore from the Union government for relief and rehabilitation.

Chennai: A high-level team from the Union government comprising senior officials from several ministries will visit Tamil Nadu on Friday to assess the damage caused by devastating Cyclone Vardah that hit the Chennai coast on December 12.

The inter-ministerial team, headed B. Praveen Vashistha, joint secretary (LWE) in the home ministry will comprise of officials from ministries of finance, agriculture, rural development, industries and HRD will visit Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts to assess the damage.

The Central team will hold discussions with senior officials from the Tamil Nadu government on Friday morning at the secretariat after which they would visit few worst affected areas in the city.

They said the team will visit Kancheepuram district on Saturday. The team, after assessing the damage, will submit a comprehensive report to the Union government on the magnitude of the damage and loses incurred after which the quantum of Central assistance would be decided.

The Tamil Nadu government has demanded Rs 22,500 crore from the Union government for relief and rehabilitation. Chief Minister O. Pannerselvam made the demand to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting in New Delhi on Monday.
