Chennai: Low pressure area to bring rain to city for 3 more days

The well-marked low-pressure is currently lying off the coast of Tamil Nadu, straddling the delta coast.

Chennai: After a hiatus, Chennai, on Wednesday, recorded moderate rain in most parts with weathermen predicting more rain for the next three days.

After a furious Gaja bid adieu, another weather system is likely to give rainfall in the northern parts of the state, while delta and coastal districts will also experience moderate rain for three more days, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai. Accordingly, the well-marked low pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining northeast Sri Lanka now lies over southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Tamil Nadu coast on Wednesday.

Dr S. Balachandran, deputy director general of meteorology, said, “Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, while the sky in Chennai is likely to be generally cloudy. One or two spells of moderate rain or thundershowers are likely to occur.”

Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 31 and 23 degree Celsius in the city, he added.

The well-marked low-pressure is currently lying off the coast of Tamil Nadu, straddling the delta coast and is expected to remain near stationary over the early part of the day.

“While remaining stationary, the circulation is expected to continue to recycle moisture over Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh. This will mean spells of rains in Chennai and surrounding places and are expected to continue,” said K. Srikanth, a weather blogger of Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikkalam.Later in the day the convection shifted north as the low pressure moved in a northward movement bringing the north coastal state and adjoining parts of south Andhra Pradesh under the rain bands, he noted.Noted weatherman S Ramachandran said there would heavy to very heavy rainfall during Nov 22-25 and reduced rains for a couple of days after that. “Heavy to very heavy rainfall is most likely around Cuddalore and Puducherry during this period. As for the Chennai-Kancheepuram-Tiruvallur region, it will experience moderate rain with occasional heavy showers. Thereafter the low pressure would gradually move inland giving rainfall and drift towards south and southwest Tamil Nadu”, said the astro-meteorologist.

“We can expect rains again during Nov 29-Dec 2 and thereafter during Dec 5-10. All these rain spells, at time heavy to very heavy, will be low pressure related”, Ramachandran said.
