Chennai: High demand could push up prices, says Traders
Koyambedu Wholesale Traders Association, V.R Soundararajan also predicted an increase in coconut prices across the state.
Chennai: Traders pointed out that coconuts from the delta districts were largely transported to various markets across the state, and Chennai’s biggest market, Koyambedu, alone received over 20 loads of coconuts every day.
President of Koyambedu Wholesale Traders Association, V.R Soundararajan, said, “Coconuts are a vital ingredient in south Indian cuisine. Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Dindigul districts have been always the hub of coconut business. Now, it is lost.”
Soundararajan also predicted an increase in coconut prices across the state.
“The government should take strong, effective measures to contain the price of coconuts. It should also plan to import, should the need arise,” said another vendor.
