Telangana farmers can use old currency notes for seeds
Hyderabad: Farmers in Telangana state can now purchase seeds using old currency notes from units belonging to Central and state government and PSUs.
The state government on Monday issued orders for accepting the demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes for purchase of seeds after the Union finance ministry gave permission to provide relief to farmers during the Rabi season.
Agriculture secretary C. Parthasarathi said, “Besides using them at units of Central and state governments and PSUs, the decommissioned notes would also be accepted for purchase of seeds from National and State Seeds Corporations, agriculture universities and the Indian Council of Agriculture Research on production of identity proof.”
With the Rabi sowing in full swing due to good water inflows into all projects and tanks on account of heavy rains in September, farmers are facing several hardships in purchasing seeds with dealers refusing old currency notes following demonetisation.
Farmers had on an agitation in some districts demanding that the government allow the use of old currency notes to purchase seeds.
