Hyderabad: Congress MP K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao on Monday filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission seeking directions to both the Centre and the Reserve Bank for India to provide smooth and trouble free exchange of demonetised currency notes besides arranging compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of those who had lost their lives due to waiting in long queues or had committed suicide due to lack of liquid cash at home.
In his complaint, the Congress MP submitted that due to the sudden announcement by the Prime Minister, people across the country had became panic stricken that resulted in long queues everywhere for exchanging old notes, leading to unending suffering.
He told the commission that 60 people had lost their lives due to these sufferings. He said that the impact of demonetisation was being heavily felt in rural areas.
He added that any failure on the part the of government and its agencies would amount to violation of human dignity which is guaranteed under Article 21.
He requested the NHRC to issue directions to various agencies including RBI and the Centre India to arrange compensation of Rs 10 lakh to each of the kin of the victims who had died, to direct the RBI to organise separate queues for senior citizens, women and handicapped, to provide shelter with facilities like chairs and drinking water for those standing in queues, direct banks to provide Rs 100 and Rs 50 currency notes in abundance, direct the RBI and finance ministry to allow salaried class to draw Rs 50,000 per month to meet their needs like paying house rents and school fees and to meet other pressing needs.
As per the rules of the commission, any complaint will be listed for hearing after scrutinising the same by the registry of the commission.
