Country sees dip in road accidents

The report said the number of road accidents had declined by 3.3 per cent to 4,64,910 in 2017, from 4,80,652 a year ago.

Hyderabad: There is a marginal decrease in road fatalities in the last year, according to the annual report released by the Union ministry of road transport and highways.

The report said the number of road accidents had declined by 3.3 per cent to 4,64,910 in 2017, from 4,80,652 a year ago. This was reflected in the number of casualties that came down from 1,50,785 in 2016 to 1,47,913 in 2017.

Traffic accident injuries constituted the eighth leading cause of death in India in 2016. They were the leading cause of health loss among men in the age group of 15 to 49 years.

A total of 1,47,913 people were killed in road accidents last year.

The number of road crash deaths has increased by 23.4 per cent from 2008 to 2017.

Among the states, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest road fatalities at 20,124, followed by Tamil Nadu (16,157), Maharashtra (12,264) and Karnataka (10,609). Telangana state stood at the ninth position with 6,529 fatalities from 22,484 road accidents. Andhra Pradesh was at the seventh position with 25,727 crashes and 8,060 deaths.

Among the cities, Chennai recorded the highest number of road accidents at 7,257 followed by Delhi at 6,673, Indore 4,513, Jabalpur 3,303, Mumbai 3,160, Kolkata 3,131and Jaipur 2,983. Delhi had the highest number of road crash deaths at 1,565 followed by Chennai (1,264), Jaipur (753), Bengaluru (616), Kanpur (608), Lucknow (581), Mumbai (467), and Agra (379).

Of these victims, 49.9 per cent were aged between 18 and 35 years, and 6.5 per cent were children younger than 18 years of age. Among the victims, 86.4 per cent were men and 20,047 women.
