Telangana: Kakatiya textile park to weave dreams

After bifurcation 75 per cent of the cotton growing areas remained in the state but it was left with only 20 per cent of spinning capacity.

Hyderabad: Telangana state is all set to overcome capacity utilisation issues in textile sector post-bifurcation of state with the setting up of Kakatiya Mega Textile Park for which Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao will lay the foundation stone in Warangal on Sunday.

After bifurcation, 75 per cent of the cotton growing areas remained in the state but it was left with only 20 per cent of spinning capacity. With this, most cotton and cotton yarn goes to neighbouring states for value addition.

Telangana state is one of the largest producers of long staple cotton with an output of 60 lakh bales per annum and stood third third nationwide in 2015-16.

The state is known for skilled textile workers but due to absence of industry they migrated to other states for their livelihood.

Industries minister K.T. Rama Rao, who played a key role in setting up the KMTP in Warangal, said, “There are 33 spinning mills state with a capacity of 10 lakh spindles, which consume only about 20 per cent of the cotton grown in the state. The other 80 per cent is being sent to other states for spinning.”

He said capacity utilisation of the weaving industry in the state was negligible nor was there much processing capacity available. “There is no further downstream facility like processing and garmenting. The state will overcome all these problems with KMTP,” Mr Rama Rao said.

He said high cotton production and availability of huge labour force presents an immense potential to create large integrated textile manufacturing capacities in the state.

This will also support overall industrial development along with value addition in the drive for job creation, he noted.

The KMTP is being set up in Warangal which is a major cotton producing district and trading centre. The region has many textile clusters and skilled manpower.
