Hyderabad: NGRI studying tremor activity

Residents spent hours outside their houses before returning. But loud sounds in the evening forced people to rush out again.

Hyderabad: Residents of Borabanda and surroundings areas panicked following tremors on Saturday.

Following the tremors, the National Geophysical Research Institute installed two seismographs to study earth activity in the area.

“I was in deep sleep at about 4 am when the strange sounds from the earth woke me up,” said Mr Qazimuddin, a merchant.

Residents spent hours outside their houses before returning. But loud sounds in the evening forced people to rush out again. They had not returned till last reports came in.

Deputy Mayor Baba Fasiuddin, who stays in the area, said the seismographs were installed at Indiranagar and Habeeb Fatimanagar, located on rocky terrain. NGRI officials told him such activity is reported when the groundwater level increases, usually after the rainy season.
