Doctors at executions is violation of oath

Planning the process of execution of prisoners and giving instructions to the jail personnel have also been ruled to be unethical.

Hyderabad: The participation of doctors in the process of execution of convicted death row prisoners is unethical, according to the amended Hippocratic Oath released earlier this month by the World Medical Association (WMA).

The WMA has strongly opposed the participation of doctors in the cases of hanging of convicts in India and stated that doctors must not participate in capital punishment in any way. Planning the process of execution of prisoners and giving instructions to the jail personnel have also been ruled to be unethical.

Explaining the idea, Dr K.K. Aggarwal, president of Indian Medical Association (IMA), said medical professionals have to work towards saving life till the last opportunity.
