DC impact: Kochi Collector orders PWD to repair lift

DC on Saturday published a report on the plight of a wheelchair-bound man arrived there to take a written exam for learner's driving test on Friday.

Kochi: A day after the media highlighted the plight of disabled men and elders reaching the Aluva mini civil station, district collector Mohammed Y. Safirulla on Saturday ordered the electrical wing of the public works department (PWD) to repair the lift at the multi-storied building immediately.

“The collector gave the orders to the PWD Electrical Wing, Muvattupuzha, to repair the lift which was not functioning for nearly a year. The assistant executive engineer promised to carry out the works on Monday itself.

“We’d submitted numerous memorandums in this regard in the past, but to be ignored,” said K. T. Sandhya Devi, the tahsildar.

DC had on Saturday published a report on the plight of a wheelchair-bound man arrived there to take a written exam for learner’s driving test on Friday.

Since the lift was not functioning, 34-year old Shymon Joseph had to be literally carried on shoulders by good Samaritans to the Regional Transport Office on the top floor.

Hundreds of elderly and physically challenged persons daily arrive here for various needs as the building houses important offices such as those of tahsildar, RT, taluk, agriculture and revenue departments and employment exchange.
Local ward councillor Seby V. Bastin had personally called on the district collector and brought the issue to his notice.
