Hyderabad: Face recognition helps arrest Metro hooligan

A combination of traditional and modern techniques were used to nab the person who indulged in the miscreant act.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd on Saturday booked a case against a drunken man who created a nuisance in the metro on September 8. He was nabbed at Tarnaka metro station with the help of CCTV footage and face recognition technology. Unsurprisingly, the culprit is a blood relation of an erstwhile prominent politician in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, said highly placed sources.

A combination of traditional and modern techniques were used to nab the person who indulged in the miscreant act. Sources said that HMRL formed a special team and kept a watch on him through different methods of investigation to somehow catch him. Only a few police and security officials knew about the investigation. Even L&T station staff were not informed till he was nabbed.

He started growing a beard and deliberately sported a dishevelled look to avoid detection. The police said that the culprit was clever and escaped in between once recently.

HMRL managing director Mr. N.V.S. Reddy said that the passenger created a lot of nuisance in a metro train on September 8, seemingly in a drunken condition but made a quick escape before the metro security personnel caught him.

The video of his nuisance activity went viral on social media. The culprit was handed over to Osmania University police station. The culprit’s name is Seelam Kanaka Raju and he is an employee of Container Corporation of India working in Sanathnagar Container depot. He was booked case under section 59 of Metro Rail (O&M) Act, 2002 and under section 70 (b) CP Act at OU PS.
