Bengaluru: Two days to go only 1,655 potholes to fix?

As on Friday evening, the civic body had filled 1, 416 potholes with 1,655 still remaining.

Bengaluru: 899 potholes on Thursday, and 517 on Friday. Are we done, BBMP? Not quite! The BBMP, which has been working overtime after a rap from the Karnataka High Court over the condition of roads in Bengaluru, says it has to fill another 1,655 potholes before the High Court-set deadline of Monday lapses. “We had identified 3,071 potholes and we have filled 1,416 by Friday evening,” a BBMP officer told Deccan Chronicle. More power to the court!

After a rap on the knuckles by the Karnataka High Court, the BBMP has been working overtime to fill potholes across Bengaluru and to meet the Monday deadline set by the court. As on Friday evening, the civic body had filled 1, 416 potholes with 1,655 still remaining. “On Thursday, we were forced to stop the work in South and West zones because of heavy rains. According to reports we received from all the eight zones, our workers have filled up 1,416 potholes by Friday evening. This work will continue and we are confident that the city will be pothole free by Monday. The BBMP had identified 3,071 potholes and 1,655 potholes are yet to be filled,” a senior BBMP officer told Deccan Chronicle.

The court, hearing a public interest litigation on potholes and the overall poor condition of roads in the city, had set Thursday as deadline. But with incessant rains, the BBMP could not carry out the works, and the deadline was extended to Monday. During its observation, the court had said that it is better to shut down BBMP as it has failed to perform. The court also mocked at the Palike, saying potholes should be named after the BBMP engineers and contractors who built the roads.
