Hyderabad: Residents of over 400 buildings at colonies located in Gachibowli, Miyapur, Bachupalli, Hydernagar, Pragatinagar, DP Pally, Kompally and Medchal have been enduring power shut down since Tuesday night. The situation hadn’t changed at the time of going to press.
About 20 per cent of IT employees stay in these areas and they could not go to their offices. As a result, IT work was affected. Though power supply was restored for a couple of hours, it was switched off as to avoid short-circuits and danger to residents as the basement of apartments and buildings were flooded.
“We will switch on the individual transformers of apartments and restore supply only after the rain water is pumped out from the cellars. Efforts are going on to pump out water. If water is pumped out by Thursday, we will resume supply on Thursday. It is inconvenience but keeping in view the safety of the residents, we cannot switch on supply," Discom director (Operations), Sreenivas Reddy said.
Southern discom CMD G. Raghuma Reddy said that power had been disconnected to prevent chances of accidents.
Residents also went without milk, newspapers and daily supplies like vegetables and fruits. Mr K. Narsimha Reddy from Pragathi Hills said that there was no milk supply to the colony; there was no chance to read a newspaper.
“As power was cut, we could not watch the news on TV. We are scared with no idea of the situation in the colony and elsewhere in the city. We could not recharge mobile phones." Ms Ch.Bharati from Balajinagar said, “When we came down in the morning to purchase milk and vegetables, the basement was filled with water and there was no way to go to market.” Balanagar corporator Narendra Chary faced angry questions from residents at Balanagar.
Alert sounded at colonies located near tanks, nalas
A quarter of Hyderabad was inundated following heavy rain on Wednesday.
Officials have sounded an alert at localities near tanks, lakes and nalas which received heavy inflows. Officials have asked people to remain in safe places and not to come on to the roads to avoid traffic jams.
GHMC staff and fire services personnel cleared water on the main road at Kukatpally at 1 pm though motorists faced traffic jams from SR Na-gar to Miyapur and from Miyapur to Bowenpally in the morning.
Water from Patel Cheruvu and Regulakunta Cheruvu near Madinaguda entered Durga Est-ates, Mythrinagar and Madinaguda. The pipeline road at Madinaguda was waterlogged.
Water from Mothkulakunta cheruvu and Kottha cheruvu near Alwal overflowed, affecting Alwal, Hakimpet and nearby localities like Srinivasnagar, Bharathinagar and Reddy Enclave.
It took four hours to tackle the situation at Hasmathpet, Shivanagar, Bank Colony and Venkatapuram. But after the water was cleared, the area was flooded once again as the bunds of Chinnarayan Cheruvu and Kottha Cheruvu were damaged. Devnar School and surrounding localities in Begumpet were inundated.
