Chennai: 3 TNEB employees suffer severe burns
Chennai: Three employees of TNEB suffered severe burns after a fire broke out on Wednesday morning in Egmore power substation. The power substation is situated opposite Chennai city police commissioner's office at Vepery.
The fire broke out at around 9. 30 am at the power substation and injured three persons including an assistant engineer. According to police, the injured identified as assistant engineer Suresh, foreman Lawrence and temporary worker Barani, have been admitted to a private hospital in Egmore. All of them are out of danger.
A fire officer said, “We reached the spot soon after we received a call at 9: 30 am. Two fire tenders from Egmore rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze. We have kept a fire tender on standby at the spot in case the fire spreads to nearby offices.”
Tangedco chairman Vikram Kapur said the fire was due to overload in the transformer. It happened while the assistant engineer and the employees were normalising supply after completion of a power shutdown at 110KV Vyasarpadi substation. The 33KV Vyasarpadi feeder line was damaged completely due to the fire, Kapur said, adding that power supply was affected in Vyasarpadi, Poonamallee and Periamedu areas. The power supply to the affected areas will be restored soon. One 16MVA power transformer is expected to be put into service by evening and power supply will be normalised in the area, he said adding that a departmental probe will be initiated.
