Unscientific spillway kills Paravur lake

The spillway has been constructed some 500 meters away from the natural opening of the lake.

Kollam: The destruction of natural estuary and unscientific construction of spillway in the Paravur Lake has adversely affected the flow of water in Ithikkara River making the banks more prone to floods. During this flood, the district administration had to channel the excess water through the spillway situated near Mukkam boat jetty. Each time while the water is let out by tunnelling, the Government loses huge money despite calls by environmentalists to invigorate the natural estuary.

"The construction of spillway in North-South direction at the opposite end of Mukkam boat jetty is purely unscientific. The Itthikkara river flows into the Paravur Lake from the Eastern direction and flows straight to the West. The spillway has thus built away from the natural course of river instigating ecological damage," environmental activist Peter Pradeep told Deccan Chronicle.

He also alleged that there are vested interests behind maintaining the spill at the current position, supported by politicians and corrupt officials with district administration.

The spillway has been constructed some 500 meters away from the natural opening of the lake.

This unscientific construction has resulted in sand deposits formed during the high tide, considerably reducing the water storage capacity of the lake.

The area of the lake near to the estuary which was once more than 15 feet deep has now almost been filled. The area between Maniyamkulam canal to the estuary has turned into a plain ground with the accumulation of clay and silt.

"If the spillway was constructed at the location where Ithikkara River meets the Paravur Lake, the sand deposits in the Lake would have been flushed out. The depth of the lake would have increased and fresh biodiversity of the lake would have improved significantly. "As well the drinking water needs of a dozen panchayats would have met going forward," he added.
