Hyderabad: Despite deploying vehicles and staff for a hygienic Bakrid, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation does not have a specific policy or guidelines of any sort to scientifically dispose bio-waste. Due to official apathy, the animal waste over the years have been either dumped in nalas or on the roadside which not only contributes to the stray dog menace but also can cause several health-related issues.
Surprisingly, the corporation does not have a scientific mechanism to dispose the bio-waste. It has been dumping the animal waste in Jawaharnagar dumpyard whereas it can be converted into manure by setting up compost units, which the corporation preaches. The corporation is also clueless about the number of goats, sheep and cattle to be slaughtered during the festival which it is supposed to maintain a record of in order to dispose and take hygienic measures. Apart from this the corporation has been only focusing on the hygiene of the Old City.
According to highly placed sources, about four lakh sheep and goats and 15,000 cattle are slaughtered in the city every Bakrid. About 3,000 metric tons of animal waste would be lifted across the city and dumped at the Jawaharnagar dumpyard. The animal waste would be dumped in a huge pit dug at the dump yard.
Sources said that the corporation could either set up compost units at multiple locations or hand over the same to the farmers in the outskirts of the city to prepare manure. However, an official claimed that like the previous year, the corporation could only collect and dump at the Jawaharnagar dumpyard. He also assured that they would only set up standard guidelines to pick up the animal waste and also dispose and recycle at the Chengicherla plant which would become operational.
