Chennai: Generally labeled as the capital of communicable diseases, North Chennai had witnessed large number of dengue cases.
Now, southern Chennai and its suburbs are next in the list. With new dengue positive cases from Tambaram being reported on Sunday, government hospital authorities are undertaking all measures to control the surge. Tambaram, Chromepet, Pallavaram and Velachery are a few localities now in the grip of dengue and viral fever in Southern parts of Chennai. At least 30 viral fever cases being reported daily at Tambaram Government Hospital for past one week.
Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) has been witnessing around 150-200 viral fever cases daily, of which roughly 35-40 cases are from Tambaram and neighbouring areas, say hospital authorities.
In view of dengue and fever scare, Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital and nearby Primary Health Centers (PHCs) have strengthened anti-dengue measures with mass cleaning and fogging activities in the premises.
“We currently have four in-patients for viral fever, but we consider referring the patient to RGGGH in case of severity or dengue symptoms. Apart from regular medicines and ORS solution, we have provided Nilavembu Kasayam to the fever patients. Mosquito nets are also being provided to the patients,” said Dr M Inbavalli, chief medical officer, Tambaram government hospital. She added that rise in viral fever is due to seasonal changes, unhygienic conditions and improper storage of water in the area. “As viral fever is on the rise in suburbs, cleanliness awareness campaign and preventive measures such as use of mosquito nets will help curb the rise in infection,” she said.
