New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other political leaders on Tuesday hailed the Supreme Court's landmark verdict, ruling that divorce among Muslims through the practice of triple talaq was "void, illegal and unconstitutional".

"Judgment of the Hon'ble SC on Triple Talaq is historic. It grants equality to Muslim women and is a powerful measure for women empowerment," Modi said.

BJP President Amit Shah said the verdict is for the equality of women in the country. He hailed the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for stand on triple talaq issue before the Supreme Court.

“This verdict is historic, its not about anyone's win or loss. I welcome this on behalf of the party,” Shah said.

Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the SC verdict is a victory of the constitutional values. “Victory of our constitutional values. Will repeat what PM has said earlier, don't link it to any religion,” he said.

Union Minister of Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi also hailed the SC verdict and its a good judgement and its another step towards gender justice and gender equality.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath welcomed the verdict of the Supreme Court on triple talaq. He said, "Historic judgement, provides not only justice but empowerment also."

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also welcomed the judgement. "We welcome the Supreme Court verdict on triple talaq and urge the central government to enact a law soon. Traditions like Triple Talaq are like mental and social harassment of our sisters and daughters and are an impediment in the progress of modern Indian society," Chouhan tweeted.

Congress leader Salman Khurshid also called the verdict "a good decision".

BJP MP Subramanian Swamy also hailed the verdict, saying today was a big day for Muslim women. "Big day for muslim women. Salute their courageousness, their fearlessness and even their ostracisation. They have stood for real reform and we must salute them and stand by them," PTI quoted Swamy as saying.

“We have to respect the judgement. It is going to be a great herculean task to implement this on ground,” ANI quoted AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi as saying.
