Hyderabad High Court takes up letter on Nerella

The High Court had also ordered doctors to check up on the condition of the Dalits.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court has taken up a letter of Justice B. Chandra Kumar, former judge of the High Court, as a public interest litigation regarding to the alleged torture of Dalits at Nerella in Sircilla Rajanna district.

Justice Kumar in his letter had requested the Chief Justice that the court intervene to do justice to the victims who had been subjected to brutal torture by the police.

The former judge requested the court to pass appropriate orders to punish the officers responsible for torturing of eight dalits and direct the government to pay '10 lakh as compensation to the victims.

The High Court is hearing a PIL filed by Mr Gaddam Lakshman, president of the Civil Liberties Committee seeking to order a probe through either the CBI or a Special Investi-gation Team into the alleged torture of the eight persons. The High Court had also ordered doctors to check up on the condition of the Dalits.

Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan directed the Registry to list the taken-up public interest litigation of Justice Chandra Kumar for hearing.
