Sabari customs need revamp: Vellapally Natesan

He said even after attaining democracy, the backward communities are still not getting social justice.

Thiruvananthapuram: Cosying up to the LDF government, SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellapally Natesan has agreed to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's views on Sabarimala. He demanded that the custom and tradition followed at Sabarimala have to be revamped.

He was speaking after distributing '8 crore microfinance loan organised by the SNDP Yogam Dr P Palpu Smaraka Union and Pathrathipar K. Sukumaran Smaraka Union here at St. Joseph’s School Auditorium.

Mr Vijayan had earlier said at Sabarimala that the temple had to be opened daily to ease heavy rush. He had also said VIP darshan should stop and instead a pass system brought in, along the lines of Tirupati.

“His views on Sabarimala entry have been taken with good intentions. Just because he called for revamping of customs, it doesn't mean that it has to be rejected outright," he said.

He also said if this is against the tradition and custom already in practice, it has to be discussed with the worshippers and then a decision has to be taken accordingly.

“The priest's sayings do not have to be taken into consideration as those times are long over,” said Mr Natesh.

He said even after attaining democracy, the backward communities are still not getting social justice.

“When R Sankar was the chief minister, SNDP Yogam got 14 colleges which were later increased to 17. Unfortunately when other organised groups acquire everything, the unorganised majority like the Ezhavas are yet to get social justice,” he said.

He added that SNDP Yogam was trying to give space for those who have been denied opportunity to excel.
