Divorces high in rural areas too of Telangana and AP

While 4,07,726 persons are separated in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, 86,280 are divorced.

Hyderabad: Couples separating or getting divorced is not an urban phenomenon. It is much more prevalent in rural and less urbanised areas. This is reflected in data on marital status in the Census 2011 released by Census India recently.

As per Census data provided for all districts of united Andhra Pradesh, East Godavari tops with the highest number of separated persons — 28,754; and Karimnagar tops when it comes to divorced persons — 7,922.

Both figures are much higher than Hyderabad, which has 8,195 and 3,912 separated and divorced persons respectively. In Visakhapatnam the figures for separated and divorced persons stood at 19,689 and 3,782.

An important finding is that the number of separated persons is much higher than the divorced. One of the reasons for this is lack of quick and easy accessibility to legal redressal systems for divorce.

While 4,07,726 persons are separated in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, 86,280 are divorced. The stark difference between the number of separated and divorced persons is visible even at the national level. While the separated persons in India are 35,35,202, the number of divorced is 13,62,316.
