Thiruvananthapuram: Seven-day entry ban

The favourite tourist spot is in ruin because of sea advancement and rough waves are destroying the shoreline.

Thiruvananthapuram: The district administration has issued a seven-day entry ban at Shangu-mugham following severe sea erosion and rough sea. The favourite tourist spot is in ruin because of sea advancement and rough waves are destroying the shoreline.

District Collector K Gopalakrishnan the oth-er day directed the Dist-rict Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) to prohibit entry after getting reports on the condition of the beach.

The Shangumugham road is in a dilapidated condition because of the rough sea and the destruction continues. Around 15 lifeguards have been deployed at the tourist spot for patrolling to ensure that nobody enters the area.

“The road is dilapidated and strong waves are eating away everything. It’s dangerous for the public. We have put lifeguards and securities for patrolling. The ban is till July 26. If the rough sea continues, the prohibition will also continue,” said an official.

An official of DTPC said that the road at Shankumugham needs reconstruction. “We will be consulting the irrigation, port and harbour engineering departments before any construction activities. Every year the sea is advancing more and there should be a study by experts,” said the official.
