Kochi: 1 worker killed as wall collapses in heavy rain

The wall in a private property collapsed over Thankavelu who was engaged in its repair work.

Kochi: One person died when a wall collapsed following heavy rain at Vachakkal near Edavanakkad in the district on Sunday. He was identified as Thankavelu, 32, a native of Dindigul in Tamil Nadu, and a resident of Pavakulam at Kaloor.

According to police, the incident occurred around 2.30 p.m. when the wall in a private property collapsed over Thankavelu who was engaged in its repair work. The others who were working at the site escaped without injuries.

Meanwhile, some houses were damaged at Kumbalangi and Mattoor near Kalady in the strong winds and heavy rain on Saturday. The house of Madathilparambil Subrahmanian at Yordhanapuram, Kalady, was destroyed fully in the incident that occurred around 4 p.m. Sudheesh, the younger son of Subrahmanian, was the only one in the house at that time. He ran out before it was completely destructed.

District collector S. Suhas reviewed the situation but did not declare a holiday for schools on Monday.

A review meeting will be held at Muvattupuzha municipality conference hall on Monday with Eldo Abraham MLA presiding to assess the situation and take precautions against the rain havoc.
