Drug racket probe: Excise enforcement wing director gets threats

The calls came after the SIT summoned several high profile Tollywood personalities for questioning.

Hyderabad: Excise enforcement wing director Akun Sabarwal, who is heading the investigation into the drug racket, has received three threatening calls on VoIP (Voice over internet protocol). According to sources, the callers, suspected to be behind the drug racket, told the IPS officer that they knew about his family’s whereabouts. The origin of the phone calls are now being traced. A top police source said that the anonymous calls originated over VoIP.

“Usually anti-social elements like extortionists use internet telephony to threaten and carry out operations. So we have taken the issue seriously and are working to trace the calls,” he said.

The calls came after the SIT summoned several high profile Tollywood personalities for questioning.

VoIP technology is where the Internet is used as the transmission medium for voice communications. “The caller was agitated how the drug probe is unravelling and exposing people behind the drug racket,” said a police source.

According to cyber forensic experts, though it is difficult to trace VoIP calls, it is not impossible.

When contacted, Central Zone DCP Noel Davis and West Zone DCP Venkateswara Rao said they haven’t received any formal complaint. Mr Sabarwal refused to comment.
