First rain brings chaos to the Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The much awaited rain finally hit Hyderabad and brought down the temperatures, but traffic jams and power cuts only flared tempers on Friday.
The IMD recorded 44.3 mm of rainfall in the city while adjacent Ranga Reddy district recorded 83.3 mm.
The road from Botanical Garden to Gachibowli junction had slow traffic movement due to water logging at the registration office. The junction was the major cause of chaos, significantly slowing down traffic.
The GHMC’s Strategic Road Development Project has not helped decongest these areas where waterlogging is becoming a major cause to slow down vehicles.
The traffic police issued an advisory on social media asking people to not venture out in Cyberabad and to put off their plans as they didn’t want further clogging of the roads. That marked a damp beginning for the weekend.
Traffic jams were reported in Gachibowli, Madhapur and Hitec City. Ms Jesmila K., a software employee, complained about heavy traffic at DLF and Hitec City. “It’s complete deadlock. My cab booking kept on cancelling because they were unable to move,” she said. Mayank Bedi, another commuter who was stuck in the area, said no vehicles were moving near the IKEA Junction.
Many of them took to social media to complain how the first rain had shown that the infrastructure of the city was not able to handle the rains.
Dense slow-moving traffic was noted at Panjagutta Junction, Ranigunj, Rocha Bazaar, Parklane, Paradise Junction, Jubilee Hills check post Junction, Prakashnagar, Rasoolpura, Banjara Hills Road No 1/7, Taj Krishna, Road No 1/10, Road No 1/12, Khaja Mansion towards Masab Tank Junction, Raheja Mindspace, Narayanamma Engineering College, to NCB Junction.
Many people dialled 100 to give information about the waterlogging and severe traffic jams but there was no response, they complained. There was waterlogging in Bahadurpura near Fizza Hotel. In Rachakonda, a private school bus was stuck in the rain water. However, after the heat of the past few weeks, people welcomed the rains as it brought the much needed respite.
