Will oppose Triple talaq bill: Asaduddin Owaisi

Terming the Bill as unconstitutional for both Muslim men and women, Mr Owaisi said it would not benefit people of both genders.

Hyderabad: MIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi opposed the introduction of the triple talaq Bill in the Lok Sabha on Friday and stated that he would would oppose it even if it was introduced a thousand times.

Terming the Bill as unconstitutional for both Muslim men and women, Mr Owaisi said it would not benefit people of both genders.

Mr Owaisi said, “The Bill will not benefit Muslim women as it puts the burden of proof on them. The husband will be in jail for three years and then who is going to pay the maintenance? Are you going to give money for the maintenance?”

“It is a violation of the Constitution’s Article 14 and 15. There is already the Domestic Violence Act 2005, CrPC Section 125 and Muslim Women Marriage Act which can be availed of,” he said with regard to punishment.

He added, “The punishment shows that if a non-Muslim man commits the same offence, the punishment is one year but for Muslim men it is three years. How justified is this?” The Bill was not only in violation of the Constitution’s Articles but the law was discriminatory in nature.

Mr Owaisi said, “Through this I would like to ask the government that if they have all the love for Muslim women, why don’t they have the same sentiment for Hindu women of Kerala? Why are you against Sabrimala?”
