Chennai: For the second time, the state government has extended the tenure of Justice Arumugasamy commission, which is probing the circumstances leading to death of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa to another four months. On recommendations from the Commission, the government has extended the tenure, which was scheduled to end by this month, by four months.
On September 25, 2017, the state government appointed Justice A Arumugasamy as the one-man commission of inquiry to look into the circumstances leading to Jayalalithaa's hospitalization and her death following prolong treatment. Jayalalithaa was admitted at the Apollo Hospitals, Chennai for fever and dehydration on September 22, 2016 and died in the hospital on December 5 2016. Several leaders, doctors, IAS and IPS officials had deposed before the Commission.
Family members of VK Sasikala, former aide of Jaya, also appeared before the Commission. For the past few weeks the Commission has been perusing voluminous medical documents filed by various doctors who were involved in providing treatment to her. Hence, the commission sought the government to extend the tenure by six months.
Originally the Commission was asked to complete the probe in three months. In December last year, the Government had extended its tenure by six months.
Considering the recommendation, the Government has extended its tenure by four months. Meanwhile, the Commission has directed auditor S Gurumurthy, editor of Tamil political weekly, to appear before the Commission on June 28.
