DMK asks Madras HC for copy of CBI report on seized currency case
Chennai: The DMK has approached the Madras High Court seeking a copy of the final report filed by CBI in connection with seizure of currencies worth '570 crore in trucks by Election Commission officials during the run-up to assembly by-poll in May 2016.
The Election Commission’s surveillance team seized three container lorries transporting cash to the tune of '570 crore near Tiruppur on 13 May, 2016. The seizure of kicked political storm in the State and political parties alleged that the money was meant for distribution to people for votes. On a writ petition from DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan the Madras High court ordered CBI probe in June 2016. And, in August 2017, CBI had filed a closure report in the court confirming that the money belonged to SBI and cash being transferred to its Visakapatnam branch. Justice R Subbiah said that he would take up the matter for hearing on Friday and pass appropriate order.
