Rakshana fulfills MBBS dream of slain cop-dad

The CM also promised to bear Rakshana's educational expenses.

Chennai: Her father’s dreams for Rakshana to land a seat in a medical college — might have come true, but sadly, there are no celebrations as he is no more to witness them.

Rakshana. M, daughter of head constable C. Munusamy, who was stabbed to death last week by a gang of chain snatchers, got a seat at Madurai Medical College, following the counselling, which she attended on Tuesday.

The constable attached to the Hosur Sipcot police station was killed when he and a team of policemen went in pursuit of chain snatchers in U. Sigiripalli area.

“It took place at around 5.30 that evening,” said distressed V. Munnilakshmi, a primary school teacher and wife of the constable.

“Rakshana was hoping to get a seat in Madras Medical College (MMC) as she has many friends there,” added her mother. Having arrived at the counselling venue with police from Hosur, the mother and daughter duo looked extremely distressed. “It is so sad to see them like this,” said Dr Kuppulakshmi, deputy director of medical education, PG and higher studies.

Though having been promised an amount of Rs 1 crore by CM J. Jayalalithaa, they are still expecting the amount. The CM also promised to bear Rakshana’s educational expenses.

Rakshana has a younger brother Upender, who is in the fifth standard. “We were initially staying at the police headquarters, but now, we have shifted to our own house,” said Munnilakshmi. “Rakshana studied at Sri Vijay Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Hosur and scored 1,182 in class 12 with a cut off of 98.25. In class 10, she ranked third in the state,” she added.

“Till date, no special request for admission has been taken into consideration,” said Dr Selvaraj, secretary, selection committee. “It’s not right to expect an MMC seat after the second phase of counselling, as no one will surrender it,” he added.
