Hyderabad: Depressed farmer commits suicide

Rekkala Muthyam Reddy, 55 was into farming for several decades and had been facing continuous economic instability.

Hyderabad: A 55-year-old farmer from Jangaon district who attempted suicide after suffering losses in farming due to hailstorms, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Kukatpally police registered a case under section 174 of the CrPc and have taken up investigation.

The deceased farmer has been identified as Rekkala Muthyam Reddy, a native of Veldanda village in Narmetta mandal of Jangaon district.

Reddy was into farming for several decades and had been facing continuous economic instability.

He incurred losses due to hailstorms in the last week of April this year, and this made him depressed.

After this, he moved to the city to live with his son Parameshwar Reddy, who is employed in a private firm and living at Balajinagar in Kukatpally.

On May 17, when Parameshwar was out on work, Reddy consumed poison at the house.

Their neighbour Raji Reddy who noticed this, rushed him to a nearby hospital where Reddy succumbed on Tuesday, said police.

Kukatpally sub-inspector Narayan Singh said that Parameshwar stated that Muthyam Reddy had committed suicide due to losses in agriculture.

A case of suspicious death has been registered and the body handed over to his family after post-mortem, said the SI.
