Bengaluru: Two armed murder suspects shot by police in self-defence, arrested

They were on the run after murdering a cab driver Kempegowda and later burning his body to steal his car.

Bengaluru: The Nelamangala rural police on Tuesday shot at two murder accused after they assaulted policemen to evade arrest.

The accused Vinod Kumar (26), a resident of Jakkasandra and Hemanth Sagar (24), a resident of Electronic City, were involved in a murder and theft case that took place on May 4.

They were on the run after murdering a cab driver Kempegowda and later burning his body to steal his car.

The accused had hired Kempegowda's car with an intention to kill him. The duo boarded the car and bided their time to commit the crime.

When the car reached an isolated place in Mallard Ansari, they asked Kempegowda to stop the car. When he stopped, the duo fatally strangulated him. Later the accused burnt the body in the same area.

Passerby who spotted the body informed the police, following which special teams were formed to track the killers.

During investigation the police received information about Vinod and Hemanth moving from Sondekoppe to Nelamangala at around 1:45 am on Monday.

A police team, led by Nelamangala circle inspector Anil Kumar, reached near Ganesh Gudi in Nelamangala town and waited for them.

As the police spotted the accused coming in a bike, they tried to intercept their vehicle. But the accused took a quick turn and sped towards Habitat Layout.

The cops chased the accused and a few minutes later, PSI Naveen Kumar tried to catch hold of Hemanth who was riding pillion. Hemanth had a machete with him and attacked the PSI, who got badly injured.

The Circle Inspector opened fire and shot at Hemanth and Vinod's leg. The accused and the cops were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

During investigation the police found that the duo was involved in several cases in and around Bengaluru. The police are waiting for them to recover to arrest them.
