Bengaluru plagued by power cuts, Bescom blames monsoon

Anand Kumar from HSR Layout said that they have no clue when the power goes or comes.

Bengaluru: The city has been facing frequent power cuts, and Bescom has a ready answer for the shutdowns, saying they are for the maintenance work ahead of the coming monsoon.

But the irony is that these power cuts occur at the slightest hint of a rain, and how will Bescom cope with the monsoon, residents ask.

On Tuesday, areas like Devasandra, Kodihalli, Battarahalli, HSR Layout, Koramangala, Ejipura, Indiranagar, Kadugodi, Mahadevapura, K.R. Puram, Ramamurthy Nagar, Peenya, Kasturi Nagar, Frazer Town, Banaswadi, Seva Nagar, Valmiki Nagar and surrounding areas faced severe power cuts due to unexpected power failure.

Mr Anand Kumar from HSR Layout said that they have no clue when the power goes or comes. “I have stopped complaining to Bescom about power cuts because every day there is more than one hour of power cut. When it rains, the situation gets worse and there won’t be power for more than six to eight hours. The government should seriously do something about power cuts,” he said.

Ms Sushila Rao, a resident of Devasandra, said, “Just a drizzle leads to a two-hour power cut then we can imagine what will happen during monsoon. I guess every house should get generators.”

When checked with Bescom, officials said that due to rains and heavy winds, there were transformer failures and feeder shutdowns and it is being rectified by the teams concerned.
