Rains bring relief in AP, showers forecast on Sunday

Visakhapatnam: Light rains on Saturday have brought relief to parts of coastal Andhra, which has been reeling under severe heat wave conditions for past 10 days. As a result, temperatures have come down in some parts of the region.

IMD has predicted that Andhra Pradesh is likely to see further fall in temperature during the next couple days, as rains have been forecast for some more days.

Visakhapatnam Airport recorded 37.2 degree Celsius on Saturday afternoon. City then witnessed gathering of clouds, followed by cool breeze and drizzle with gusty winds. This brought down the temperature by around four degrees Celsius.

The Met office said a trough / wind discontinuity is running from northwest Madhya Pradesh to south Tamil Nadu across interior Maharashtra and interior Karnataka. Lower tropospheric southerly / south westerly winds are prevailing over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. These troughs are extended areas of relatively low pressure, whose presence brings together moisture, leading to formation of rain clouds.

Dr. Sagili Karunasagar, scientist at IMD-Amaravati, said heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Krishna, NTR, Eluru, ASR, Kakinada and Konaseema districts on Sunday. Remaining parts of the state will witness rainfall.

Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds up to 40–50 kmph over districts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema are likely during the next three to four days, the IMD forecast.

Anantapur recorded a maximum temperature of 40.1 degrees Celsius, highest in the state on Saturday. Kurnool followed with 39.4 degrees Celsius. Remaining parts of the state recorded temperatures below 39 degrees Celsius on the day.
