Salem: Temple elephant’s first death anniversary remembered

The death of that affectionate pachyderm was a matter of deep grief and pain for devotees in Salem.

SALEM: It was a moving sight at the Sri Sukavaneshwarar temple here on Sunday, as members of the public joined devotees in paying homage to mark the first death anniversary of the temple female elephant Raja Rajeshwari.

It may be recalled that the temple elephant, after a prolonged illness and best efforts by veterinarians and HR and CE department officials to save it, passed away this day last year. The death of that affectionate pachyderm was a matter of deep grief and pain for devotees in Salem.

On the elephant's first death anniversary today, devotees and members of the public gathered at the temple when special 'poojas' was performed to the presiding deity to mark the occasion. Then, they all paid floral tributes to a picture of the deceased elephant kept in the temple and also at the 'samadhi' of Raja Rajeshwari within the complex.
