Random checks at PVNR expressway for lack of CCTVs
Hyderabad: Lacking CCTV cameras on the PVNR Expressway, traffic police officials have to conduct random manual checks to prevent heavy vehicles and buses from taking the speedway.
The traffic police has written to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) to instal CCTV cameras on the expressway so that challans could be sent to vehicle owners.
On Tuesday, the traffic police penalised 32 heavy vehicles for using the expressway. The restriction came into force in 2015 because the heavy vehicles were causing traffic congestion and risking the safety of passengers and road-users.
There is a complete prohibition on the movement of contract carriages and goods carriage vehicles over the expressway in the Cyberabad commissionerate jurisdiction.
These vehicles can take the expressway only with a prior permit from the DCP office. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Cyberabad DCP S.M. Vijay Kumar said the expressway has sharp curves at certain spots and the police has received complaints from commuters regarding overspeeding and overtaking by these heavy vehicles when there is little space to do so.
Along with heavy vehicles, two-wheelers and autorickshaws are also banned on the expressway.
