Chennai: Three mowed down at bus stop by speeding tipper lorry
Chennai: In a tragic incident, three people waiting in a bus stand were killed as they were mowed down by a speeding tipper lorry at Ramapuram area in the city in the wee hours of Sunday.
The incident occurred at 2: 10 am when the three victims came to the Manappakam bus stop to board a bus to Koyambedu Mofussil Bus Terminus, when a speeding tipper lorry ran out of control and knocked them and killed them on the spot.
Police sources said the driver, who had dozed off, abandoned the lorry and fled the scene. When alerted the St. Thomas Mount traffic investigation Police rushed to the spot, held enquiries with the public and removed the bodies to the Chromepet government hospital for post-mortem.
The victims were identified as Moorthy (32) from Andhra Pradesh, Murali (29) and Sivakumar (29), both natives of Krishnagiri district.
Moorthy, who was employed in a bakery was unhappy in his job and had decided to return to his native place. He came to the bus stand to take a bus to Koyambedu, while his two friends came to send him off when the mishap occurred.
St. Thomas Mount traffic investigation police told reporters, “A tipper lorry transporting crushed stones was heading towards Porur on Mount-Ponnamalle high road when it went out of control, reportedly after its brakes failed and rammed the victims. we suspect brake failure resulted in the accident, but a report from technical experts will ascertain the exact reason,” the police said in a statement.
