Andhra Pradesh man in Sri Lanka escapes unhurt

Mr Babu had a minor injury to his nose during the stampede that occurred after the blast near the hotel where he was staying.

Anantapur: Telugu Desam politician from Anantapur district Amilineni Surendra Babu, who is also managing director of a construction company, escaped unhurt from the series of blasts that shook Colombo on Sunday morning.

Mr Babu had a minor injury to his nose during the stampede that occurred after the blast near the hotel where he was staying.

Mr Babu was in Colombo on a holiday with his business partners K. Rajagopal, A. Venkatesh and Mahidhar Reddy. They were in a room on the 24th floor of Shangrilla Hotel, and were having breakfast when the blast occurred.

“Soon after the blast about a few metres away, all the tourists tried to come out the hotel which resulted in a stampede. I suffered minor injury on my nose after I fell on a pillar,” Mr Babu said. He and his friends got out from the emergency exit of the hotel.

Mr Babu’s nephew Dharma Teja told this newspaper that Mr Babu and his partners who were on a day’s trip to Colombo were supposed to return on Sunday.

“We spoke once over the phone and they were safe and waiting for operations to commence at the airport,” he said.

Mr Babu aspired to an Assembly seat from Anantapur and Kalyanadurgam in the recent elections, but didn’t get either.
