Taslima against death for rape

No one is born a criminal, says the acclaimed writer.

Kozhikode: Noted writer Taslima Nasreen has opposed capital punishment for rape saying all have a right to live in society. “No one is born a criminal. Hence they must be given a chance to correct their sins,” she said after launching her book ‘Split: A Life’ at Hilite Mall here on Saturday.

“In West Bengal, a rapist was hanged to death, which has in no way reduced the rape cases in the state. Men should be educated against indulging in these crimes,” she said while speaking during the function.

“I have been targeted by fundamentalists for taking up women’s causes. I only believe in the religion of mankind and am against the religion that kills people.

West Bengal government had banned the book for allegedly hurting the sentiments of Muslim community. But each word that I have written has spread across the world through the internet. Nobody can stop me from writing or propagating my ideas,” she said.

‘Split: A Life’ in English features her experiences as a doctor and a social activist and her life in exile in India.
