RTOs can't check GPS devices in public service vehicles
Chennai: Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the state have been ordered not to check the installation of GPS-based tracking devices and emergency buttons during registration of public service vehicles including tourist buses, college and school vehicles and taxis.
It was in January this year that the transport ministry came up with the order to install GPS-based tracking devices and emergency buttons in public service vehicles and April 1 was the deadline to meet the requirement. Due to this, registration of vehicles was also hit due to the additional costs involved, said transport officials.
However, no control centres have been set up which translates to the devices being useless, though installed. So, RTOs were asked not to check the installation of these devices. The Road Safety Week is one of the measures that the state is undertaking to ensure safety on roads. Scheduled between April 23 and 30, the week will witness numerous awareness initiatives, stressing on helmet and seat belt awareness.
