Hyderabad: Two-wheeler drivers enter ORR, risk lives

Bikers enter ORR via unauthorised entry points.

Hyderabad: Although two-wheeler riders are not allowed on Outer Ring Road (ORR), 1,399 cases were registered against two-wheeler riders from January 2016 to April 2017 for entering ORR. ORR is not safe for two-wheelers as cars move at high speeds. If there is a collision death is almost certain for two-wheeler riders.

The government had imposed a ban on two-wheelers on ORR after an increase in accidents. Two-wheelers are banned on ORR and violators are liable for prosecution under the MV Act, IPC and the Cyberabad City Police Act.

Road safety authorities say that two-wheelers are prone to accidents on ORR. Cyberabad traffic police says that despite warnings bikers enter ORR through unauthorised entry and exit points as the legal entry and exit to ORR is monitored.

S. Adishankar, of road safety NGO Road Craft is shocked that even after entry and exit points are monitored two-wheelers get into ORR. He said, “Police must address this issue. If there are unauthorised entries and exits they must be sealed. They should also run awareness campaigns on the dangers of driving on ORR.”

Imran Jeddy, a resident of PBEL City near Appa junction who drive through ORR everyday said, “The ORR is a dangerous road. If larger vehicles cannot guarantee the safety of passengers then an exposed rider has almost no chance of surviving an impact.”

He adds, “There is a reason why bikes are banned on ORR. The trouble is that most guys who ride on ORR are either very young or people who live nearby. Bikes are seen around Patancheru and Medchal. I saw some bikers the day before yesterday when I went to that area. Police does not keep watch there.” Cyberabad traffic DCP A.R. Srinivas said, “Despite warnings and fines two-wheelers enter ORR. We impose heavy fines on violators.”
