Land grab: Freedom fighter Doreswamy gets his court

Mr Doreswamy and Mr Ramaswamy staged a protest in front of the minister's office.

BENGALURU: The government relented on the issue of setting up a special court to try those accused of encroaching upon land by a committee headed by former JD (S) legislator, A T Ramaswamy, following a protest by freedom fighter H S Doreswamy outside the office of law and parliamentary affairs minister T.B. Jayachandra in Vidhana Soudha on Monday.

Mr Jayachandra told the media here he would issue orders for the special court and for appointment of judges while admitting that the nonagenarian was staging a protest on the same issue for the fourth time.

On Monday, around 11.30 am, Mr Doreswamy and Mr Ramaswamy staged a protest in front of the minister’s office. Mr Jayachandra, however, could not meet them in view of a debate in the Legislative Assembly on establishment of Anti Corruption Bureau.

The minister returned to his office at the end of the debate in the evening and met Mr Doreswamy along with RDPR minister Mr H K Patil and IT&BT minister Mr S R Patil.

Upset with the minister for keeping him waiting through the day, Mr Doreswamy vent his ire against Mr Jayachandra and the state government.

Commenting on the state government’s decision to set up ACB, Mr Doreswamy said he was not such an arm but it must not be under the control of the Chief Minister.

“Even in appointment of the Lokayukta, Mr Siddaramaiah was adamant. If the Chief Minister alone is taking decisions, why should a committee exist? Let them recommend a honest judge for the post of Lokayukta and strengthen the organisation.

As per people's opinion, the government should have dropped the idea of setting up ACB. Or else, the government will get a bad name. Corruption has increased in all departments and Lokayukta alone can not eradicate corruption. The CM has curtailed the power of Lokayukta police,” he added.
