RAMESWARAM: Thousands of devotees thronged the Sri Ramanathaswamy temple here on Friday from different parts of the country on the occasion of 'Maha Shivaratri' festival.

The processional deities of dancing Shiva (Lord Nataraja) and of his consort Goddess Sivakamisundari Ambal and other deities were taken in separate chariots in a procession around the four streets around the temple here, which was witnessed by a large number of people who had lined up on either side.

Groups of 'Sadhus' from various North Indian towns and cities including from Gujarat and Delhi had also come down to Rameswaram with pots of 'Ganga water' with which they later bathed the deities of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi in the main shrines of this ancient temple. Special 'poojas' were also performed to the principal deities to mark the occasion.
